3.4L TDC / DOHC ENGINE SWAP

The 3.4 Twin Dual Cam or Dual Overhead Cam as it was later called is a 60 degree V6 with 4 overhead cams. The engine is an evolution of the original 2.8 liter V6, and was the predecessor to the 3800V6 that is still being used today.
My first (only) 3.4 DOHC swap involved an '88 Fiero with an Isuzu 5 speed. I completed the swap in spring of '04. I went though three used engines before I came up with a one that I could use. These things apparently have an oiling problem with the rod bearings. After doing a minor overhaul on the third engine (the first two needed new crankshafts), I was able to finish the swap. The engine sounds good and runs very well. The car is a lot of fun to drive, but it just doesn't have enough power to keep me smiling for very long. I took it to Island Dragway and ran a best 1/4 mile time of 14.38. The 7000 rpm limit is amazing. In order to get good satisfying power out of it you need to keep the engine in the 4000-7000 rpm range. That's quite easy to do, but you end up making a lot of noise and using a lot of fuel in the process. Not a problem when you want to have some fun, but for normal daily driving it's just not a great engine, IMO. After owning/driving 4.9 and 3800 powered Fieros for many years, I think they are a better choice. Still the 3.4 is a popular swap and most people that own them are very happy with them.
