Important Notice - Read This First
Before any tear-down or disassembly begins, review the following information:
- A substantial amount of modifications are required to the struts. These include removing the stock lower spring perch and reducing the diameter of the strut "cap". Keep
in mind that this may require a substantial amount of time.
- This kit will result in different than stock spring-to-tire clearance, inspect the installation to verify that there is adequate clearance with the
wheels/tires before operating the vehicle.
- It is the responsibility of the purchaser and installer of this kit to verify suitability / fitment of all components
and ensure all fasteners and hardware achieve complete and proper engagement. Improper or inadequate
engagement can lead to component failure.
General Information and Disassembly Instructions
General Information
Installation of this kit should ONLY be performed by persons experienced in the installation of suspension systems.
Before assembling the coil-over conversion kit, double check the following items to ensure a trouble-free installation.
- Make sure this is the correct kit to match the model year of the Fiero it is being installed on. Pay special attention to the bolt spacing on the upper strut hats.
- Inspect the package contents against the parts list to ensure that all components and hardware are included
- Using only new struts is recommended, therefore strut disassembly will not be covered by these instructions.
Strut Modifications
WARNING
STRUTS MAY CONTAIN GAS OR OIL UNDER PRESSURE. EXTREME CARE MUST BE USED WHEN MAKING ANY MODIFICATIONS TO THE STRUT. IF THE STRUT
IS OVERHEATED OR PUNCTURED IT MAY RESULT IN FIRE OR EXPLOSION. IF YOU ARE UNSURE HOW TO PERFORM THE FOLLOWING MODIFICATIONS SAFELY, STOP AND GET HELP.
These modifications should be performed by a qualified machinist.
- Using a lathe, cut the weld between the spring perch and the strut body. Also reduce the diameter of the top cap or gland nut to match the main body diameter if needed. Some struts will not need this modification, depending on manufacturer. If a lathe is not available, these modifications can be done using a grinder. Use care to avoid cutting or grinding into the strut body.

- Cut the spring perch into two pieces and remove it from the strut. Remove any remaining weld that protrudes from the strut body.

- Clean and paint the strut if desired.
Assembly Instructions
- Position an O-ring on the strut in the approximate positioion shown.

- Slide the threaded collar over the strut and roll it over the O-ring. The collar should seat firmly against the lower mount of the strut. The O-ring will roll between the collar and the strut and prevent unwanted movement and noise.
- NOTE: Threaded collars need to be bored oversize to fit Koni struts. This can be done by Fiero Addiction free of charge if specified when ordering.

- Seal the top of the collar with RTV or similar sealant to prevent dirt and moisture from entering between the two parts.

- Slide a washer and the lower bushing onto the strut end as shown.

- Attach the top hat to the coil spring using the provided nylon ties. This step will prevent the springs from becoming unseated when the car is raised off the ground.
- NOTE: Top hat shape may be different than shown depending on application.

- Install the spring/top hat assembly over the strut. Push the top hat onto the bushing until the bushing is fully seated in the hat. It may help to wobble the hat from side to side while putting downward pressure on it. A nut and washer can also be used along with a pry bar on top to seat the bushing. You just need to get it on far enough so the top bushing, washer, and nut can be installed.

- Install the upper bushing, washer, and nut. Tighten the nut just enough to begin to compress the bushings.

- The complete strut assembly should be installed in the car following the standard replacement procedure as outlined in the service manual for the car. The upper and lower stiffener plates should be re-used where the top hat bolts to the chassis.
